I never really thought of America
as a foreign country. It was a separate country, but not to me a foreign one,
we’ve been through too much, we’re family, joint heirs to a common inheritance
of freedom under law. So it is with great distress that as a Right-leaning
Libertarian I look to the U.S and see the emergence of one Donald Trump. There
was one thing that has truly annoyed me about his rise. It’s not any of his
ludicrous comments about Mexicans or Muslims, terrible though they may be. No,
it’s the way he portrays himself.
He has likened himself to Reagan.
Not totally inaccurate; they’re both ex-TV and ‘outsiders’ in fairness. But
here’s the difference; Reagan grasped that you could be anti-establishment
without being constantly crass, foul-mouthed and narcissistic. Reagan
understood that it was not just simply enough to be angry and complain all the
time (although that’s not without some justification, and occasionally it has
its uses). You need that little breadth of warmth when you give your message to
the people. You need to offer something better than the current system. So far
from Trump I’ve heard no credible solution to any of America’s current
problems, just a lot of noise about what a problem they are in the first place.
The worst part? He is dragging the
Republicans down with him. There’s some wonderful talent on show of the
Republican candidates, none more so than Rand Paul, whose strict
constitutionalist approach is growing his support. But the problem is the likes
of Paul don’t get a look in as Trump continues to be the loudest and most
controversial of all the candidates and so he naturally commands the attention
of the media, which ironically only adds to his popularity. He is discrediting
all the other Republican candidates and solidifying their place as an
unelectable force in America. So consequently it is now likely that America
will end up electing another Democratic president that is committed to ever
increasing its $18 Trillion debt.
Come on cousins, you can do better
than this. You deserve better and we expect better.
