Sarah Olney has been elected MP for Richmond Park - Zac Goldsmith has been defeated. This is the Lib Dem's first by-election win in 10 years.
Liberal Democrat candidate, Sarah Olney, is set to become the new MP for Richmond Park beating Zac Goldsmith, who stood down as a Conservative MP to run as an independent, in what will be a shock result. Zac Goldsmith quit the Conservative party over the government's pro-Heathrow expansion stance in order to campaign against it. However, the Liberal Democrats have campaigned on the issue of Brexit in the strongly pro-Remain constituency (Goldsmith voted Leave).
The Liberal Democrats haven't gain a seat in a by-election for ten years. Turnout is 53.6%, with 41,367 votes being cast. In the 2015 general election Zac Goldsmith increased his majority to 58.2% of the vote. Zac Goldsmith was the Conservative candidate for London Mayor earlier in the year, but was beaten by Labour's Sadiq Khan.
